Balcony of Varem-Marem
Towards the conclusion of the last century, Gyumri found itself etched into cinematic history through films that utilized the city’s buildings and structures, turning it into a captivating backdrop. These film locations, situated in Gyumri’s historical center, have become enduring monuments of history and culture. One such film, “Tango of Our Childhood,” produced by the “Hayfilm” film studio in 1984, left an indelible mark on the city. In the aftermath of the film’s production, the people of Gyumri bestowed upon a particular balcony a new name and identity: the “Balcony of Varem-Marem.”
This transformation reflects the profound impact that cinematic creations can have on the collective identity and imagination of a community. The building, where this iconic balcony is located, has a rich history. Originally belonging to the Abovyans and Khoyetsyans, renowned merchants of Alexandrapol, the building served a dual purpose during the Soviet era. In addition to being a merchant’s residence, it housed the post office of the Russian army in one part of the building. In contemporary times, the building has taken on a new role as it was handed over to the branch of Gyumri of the Armenian Academy of Sciences. This transition demonstrates the adaptive nature of historical structures, as they continue to contribute to the evolving identity and functions of the city.
