Black Fountain
The fountain, constructed in 1982 and inaugurated in 1984, was a celebratory addition to mark the 60th anniversary of Leninakan. The lively residents of Gyumri affectionately coined a new name for the fountain: the “60th Birthday Cake.” Positioned next to the Polytechnic Institute, it became a central hub for the city’s youth and a social entertainment center. For four years, the fountain thrived as a bustling spot cherished by Gyumri residents and young people. ]
However, the devastating earthquake of 1988 altered the landscape. The earthquake wreaked havoc on the Polytechnic buildings, numerous nearby residential houses, and the fountain area. In the aftermath, shacks were erected in the park area, as it was one of the few spaces where houses hadn’t collapsed, reflecting the resilience and adaptability of the community during challenging times.
