“Hollywood” Backyard
The locale dubbed “Hollywood Backyard” holds a significant place in Armenian cinema, having served as the backdrop for three renowned films at different junctures: “Tango of Our Childhood,” “Happy Bus,” and “Dawn on Sad Street.” The “Hollywood” building itself, dating back to the late 19th century, was originally owned by Colonel Vekilyan, a high-ranking officer in the Russian garrison. During the 1840s and 1850s, the colonel leased several rooms, predominantly to Russian dignitaries who visited Gyumri. Presently, the iconic courtyard is home to approximately 10 families.
Despite its fame and frequent visits by both Armenian and foreign tourists, the residential section of the courtyard is reportedly in a state of disrepair according to residents. The juxtaposition of its cinematic history and the current condition of the living quarters adds an intriguing layer to the narrative of “Hollywood Backyard,” making it a place of both cultural significance and contemporary challenges.
