Hovhannes Shiraz House-Museum
Hovhannes Shiraz, a renowned Armenian poet born in Gyumri, made his literary debut in 1935 with “Beginning of Autumn.” The distinguished novelist Atrpet bestowed upon the talented poet the literary name “Shiraz,” expressing that “this young man’s poems have the fragrance of fresh and dew-covered roses of Shiraz.” The poet’s house-museum, located on Shahumyan Street, particularly the part known as Varpetats, stands as a tribute to his life and work.
Built in 1883 by Keshishyan from Alexandropol, the house features a magnificent gate on the west facade, leading to an inner courtyard. Following the Soviet revolution, the house was nationalized and repurposed as a residential and production space, with the basement serving as a production hall. In the 1980s, residents vacated the premises, and in 2003, the House-Museum of Hovhannes Shiraz was officially inaugurated. Though the house was presented to the poet in 1983, he lived there for less than a year before his passing in 1984. The museum now stands as a tribute to his life, preserving the legacy of this influential Armenian poet.
