Lodka Building
The iconic building that connects Gyumri’s central square to Ryzhkov Avenue is affectionately known as the “Lodka building” by the locals, owing to its distinctive architecture. Designed by Hovhannes Kajaznuni, the first Prime Minister of the first Republic of Armenia, this building holds historical significance. The unique architecture is said to be inspired by the ships of Cilicia, reflecting Kajaznuni’s dream of a unified Armenian state. Remarkably, the construction materials include gravestones sourced from the former cemetery in Gorky Park, adding a layer of historical resonance to the structure.
Originally intended as a residential house, the building underwent changes in the early 1950s when the second and third floors became home to the central library of Leninakan. Later, through the efforts of the Mother See and a decision by the governor, a portion of the building housing the library was allocated to the Diocese of Shirak. This transition in purpose mirrors the dynamic history of the building, embodying Gyumri’s cultural and architectural heritage.
