Mushurba
The Mushurba, known as the “klklan” cup among the people of Gyumri, distinguishes itself from ordinary cups with a unique sound that resonates when drinking water from it. Its origin story is equally unique. Poloz Mukuch, a vendor of fruits and vegetables in Gyumri’s market, shared a humorous encounter with his neighbor, Ones, who was engrossed in listening to a watermelon as if it were singing. Mukuch, in jest, pointed out that he, too, sings, especially while enjoying a glass of wine. Amused by this banter, Poloz invited Ones to Citro Alek’s wine house later that evening.
The gathering at the wine house was marked by laughter, jokes, song, dance, and, inevitably, conversation about Poloz’s desire for a singing glass. Amid the revelry, Master Suro, a friend of Poloz, recalled the idea and spent the entire night in his workshop recreating his grandfather’s Erzurum mushurba, complete with a distinctive clinking sound. The following evening, he unveiled his invention to the delight and surprise of everyone present. The story captures the essence of a lighthearted moment, where a playful comment evolves into a creative endeavor, resulting in the birth of the unique Mushurba or klklan cup, adding a touch of joy and novelty to the convivial gatherings of Gyumri.
