Residential house of Geghamyans
Built between 1900-1920 by the Geghamyan brothers, this remarkable structure in Alexandropol (modern-day Gyumri) possessed a distinctive architectural design, making it one of the modern houses in the city during the first half of the 20th century. The story behind the construction of the house is intriguing: upon learning that a renowned Italian architect was in Tiflis, the Geghamyan brothers personally visited him to commission the project for their residence.
They brought the design back to Alexandropol and directed local builders to commence construction. This single-story house showcases unique architectural solutions. Some wooden elements in the living room and bedroom, including ceilings and doors, have been preserved. Presently, the rear part of the structure on Rustaveli Street serves as the apartment of Antonio Montaldo. The House of Geghamians has found its way into Armenian cinema, with its exterior featured in films by Albert Mkrtchyan, such as “Dawn on Sad Street” and “The Killed Dove.” This historical building stands as both a testament to architectural creativity and a backdrop to cinematic artistry in Gyumri.
