St. Gregory the Illuminator’s church
St. Gregory the Illuminator’s church stands at the crossroads of Rustaveli and Djivan streets. The original church, erected during the time of Alexandropol, holds a captivating construction history. Built in 1862 and initially named “Gheghtsonts chapel,” the church derived its name not from the attendees’ status as peasants but because the majority of the construction funds were contributed by the peasants.
The church was fashioned to their preferences, diverging from the typical symmetry of Armenian church architecture. Dubbed “Geghtsonts Chapel” based on its appearance, the church endured the 1988 Spitak earthquake without collapsing. However, in 2003, the church collapsed on its own, leaving only the vestibule standing. Subsequently, the church underwent restoration and has been operational since 2015.
